I'm going to try and write this review without cursing. It's going to be really hard for me, but just be glad you aren't in front of me right now.
I didn't really know what to expect from When the Serpent Bites, it's my first by Nesly Clerge. And Mr. Clerge, if we ever meet in person, I've got some choice words for you! Anywho, back to my perception of the book. Whatever I expected from the title or the cover, I can't remember. Because after reading, my mind is running through a foggy maze of distrust and deceit!
Frederick Starks lives in a world I hope to never know. One where you can't trust, you can't expect loyalty, you can't give without being taken advantage of, you can't love without getting burned and you can't truly live by the golden rule. I started to question about 50% in to this book, if there were any characters with redeemable qualities? My answer after finishing, is a resounding no. Everyone is out for themselves in this effed up world!
It's a fictional story, yes, but reads like it could be ripped from the headlines of today's paper. Even typing that, makes me feel a little queasy! Have we gotten so crazy as a society that we trust no one and believe people are inherently bad to the core?! Ugh. Mr. Clerge!! You have me up at 3am questioning society and the deeds of man! This reaction is definitely not normal for me. However, every once in a while I read something that screws (insert curse word here) with my mind enough, that I can't help but ponder such craziness. Well done, sir!
This review has gotten quite wordy without actually saying if I liked the book or not. Well, sometimes the mark of a good/great book is the reaction you get out of the reader. I'm not going to lie and say I loved every word, it's a long book. Do I think some flashbacks and life's ponderings could've been shortened or cut? Sure. But in the end was I left with a visceral reaction and my jaw on the ground. Yep! Was I intrigued enough to plow through this thing in a matter of one day. Why yes I was.
Before I start slurring my words, I'm giving this one 4 dragons breath vodka shots.
Why dragons breath, you ask? Well, I guess you'll just have to read and find out!
About the Author:
Nesly Clerge received his bachelor’s degree in physiology and neurobiology at the University of Maryland, and later pursued a doctoral degree in the field of chiropractic medicine. Although his background is primarily science-based, he has finally embraced his lifelong passion for writing. Clerge’s debut novel, When the Serpent Bites, is due out in 2015, with the sequel to follow. His debut novel explores choices, consequences, and the complexities of human emotions, especially when we are placed in a less-than-desirable setting. When he is not writing, Clerge manages several multidisciplinary clinics. He enjoys reading, chess, traveling, exploring the outdoors, and spending time with his significant other and his sons.
